Sequana’s Healing temple at the Source of the River Seine
The Source of the Severn and the Lydney temple.
Or visit the Story Archaeology page: The Romano British temple at Lydney
The site was excavated by Mortimer Wheeler and his wife Tessa, in 1920’s I have also always been also interested in the influence this site had on Tolkien while he was writing The Hobbit.
Apparently the Wheelers invited him to spend time at the site as he was very interested in Nodens. He was of course, Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford. However, back when I was wriing about Fled Bricrenn, (Bricriu’s feast), I do remember commenting that Tolkien did not seen to be particularly knowledgeable about the stories from the early Irish texts which add so much evidence and depth to the wider historical and mythological picture.
This article by Matthew Lyons, ‘J.R.R. Tolkien – A Roman temple and a ring’ is well worth reading if you would like more details.
The River Shannon
Shannon Views
There are already a considerable number of posts and podcast pieces on Sinann and the Shannon that have been published on StoryArchaeology since 2012. However I am also very interested in your Shannon views as well. Send me stories, information or pictures about places and stories on the Shannon that interest you, I would love to add them under the new Shannon Views heading.
